What’s Been Damaged?

Depending on whether you sat on your glasses, your dog chewed the arm tips, or they fell from a tall height, you could be dealing with a variety of nicks and bends. Assess the damage to check:

  • Is a lens scratched?
  • Are screws loose or missing?
  • Are they bent or misaligned when you wear them?
  • Are the nosepads missing?

Your Quick Emergency Fixes

If you can’t go another minute without a fix, as in they are not wearable, we have a few of your fastest solutions here to try.

1. Missing Screw

One of the most common issues you might come across is when a screw has fallen out of the hinge. This causes the arm of your glasses to bend loosely at the temple and your glasses can no longer sit properly on your face.

  • Paperclip: Straighten a paperclip and use a tiny piece as a temporary pin in place of the screw.
  • Toothpick with tape: Slide a small piece of tape around the end of a toothpick, push it into the screw hole, and trim the excess.

2. Bent Frames

Bent frames are also very common and are immediately noticeable. Your vision can no longer focus in the center of your lenses, and it can feel very uncomfortable on your ears.

  • For metal frames, very gently twist the frames back into place with your fingers.
  • For plastic frames, warm them slightly with a hairdryer on low for 10–15 seconds then carefully reshape. Don’t force it as plastic can break if pushed too hard.

3. Loose Nosepads

Nose pads that constantly fall off can make your glasses slide down your face. Very annoying! To fix this problem quickly:

  • Tape: Try a tiny piece of double-sided clear tape where the nosepad belongs.
  • Glue Dab: Let a dab of household glue completely dry in the place of your nosepad.

When You Have Cracked or Damaged Lenses

A cracked lens is a more serious problem as this damage is also dangerous. It’s important to not wear your eyeglasses if the glass is cracked. Broken glass resting in front of your eyes is a harmful combination.

If you’re managing a small scratch on your lenses we’ve created a guide for how to get scratches out of glasses, including the use of a microfiber cloth, mild dish soap, and isopropyl alcohol. These are the best solutions to help completely clean your glasses so that your scratch is less noticeable.

Other solutions, like applying a wax-based product to fill in the scratch, can actually damage your lenses further.

Affordable Replacements

Sometimes, emergency fixes just aren’t enough. When your glasses are truly beyond quick repair, like a cracked lens or a very warped frame, it’s time to pause for a moment and look for a suitable replacement.
